Earlier this week I decided to cut ties with my current domain registrar, GoDaddy, and switch to Namecheap due to the recent actions of GoDaddy’s CEO, Bob Parsons. In case you missed it, this article explains why I want nothing further to do with GoDaddy.
So I get an email from Namecheap this morning telling me that my domain transfer has been canceled. Reason for cancellation: “The current registrar has rejected transfer (please contact them for details)”.
Hmmm. This is interesting.
I then called GoDaddy at 7:38am (Eastern) this morning and immediately I hear the famous greeting, “Due to increased call volume, your wait time is estimated to be … 8 minutes.”
This was especially amusing to me because GoDaddy is based in Arizona, and the local time in Arizona when I called was 4:38am.
If there is an 8 minute wait time when calling GoDaddy at 4:38am, I can think of only 3 reasons for the delay:
- GoDaddy is flooded with new orders from all the latest publicity surrounding Bob Parson’s elephant ordeal.
- People like me have had enough with Bob Parsons and they’re leaving GoDaddy in droves.
- It’s 4:38am in the morning and there’s only one dude answering phones.
To be honest, it’s probably “C”.
After a 14 minute wait, I finally get connected with a live rep at GoDaddy. I then politely asked for the reason why my domain transfer request was rejected.
Upon reviewing my account, the GoDaddy rep said that he didn’t see any reason for my request to be rejected. He then put me on hold to investigate this matter further.
When he came back on the line, he said, “Has this particular domain been registered with GoDaddy for less than 60 days?” I said, “Yes.”
The GoDaddy rep then said, “I can prohibit domain transfers than have been with us less than 60 days.”
I then calmly replied, “What rule gives you the right to prohibit domain transfers? Why is it up to you?”
He said, “No, it’s not up to me, it’s ICANN’s policy. You know, the organization that oversees domain names, IP addresses, etc. ICANN prohibits domain transfers than have been with a registrar for less than 60 days. You can resubmit your transfer request to us next month after 60 days has elapsed.”
Oh, “ICANN”. Not “I can”.
Who’s on first?
In fairness to GoDaddy, all of my other domain transfer requests went through without a hitch. It was just that one domain that hasn’t been with GoDaddy for the entire mandatory 60 day period. In case you’re interested, here’s a link to ICANN’s 60-day policy
